Bolla, 2013, oil/panel, 60" x 50", click to enlarge
The Toronto International Art Fair opens next week and I will be showing this painting at the Bau-Xi Galleries booth. It's a large painting (for me) using summer colours. The formal composition is arranged to allow the interplay of light, form and textures.
I will also be showing recent paintings at the Gallerie de Bellefeuille booth.

Mastamasti, oil/panel, 60" x 28" (click to enlarge)
A request from my gallery in Santa Fe (Hunter Kirkland Contemporary) for some vertical paintings has prompted me to do a series of them. I find the strong vertical format a challenge that lends itself to these gnarly kinds of trees.

The Nasrid Gardens: Alhambra, 2013, oil/panel, 40x40" (click to enlarge)
The title is based on my travels last year to Spain. I visited the Alhambra in Grenada along with several other amazing gardens in Sevilla's Real Alcazar and elsewhere. Hopefully, there will be a series of these paintings in the next 6 months.

Nippa, 2013, oil/panel, 20" x 20"
Summer is here! The trees are bursting and so is the energy of all living things. I'm working on a series that tries to express this using the blossoms all over so many trees in my region. Right now the apples, and flowering crabs are wowing me. Last week it was the magnolias. I love oriental brush paintings, particularly the zen schools. I'm trying to pull off that spontaneous and effortless touch using oils. This is a sketch.

Islands in the Narrows, 30"x60", oil/panel, click to enlarge
More experimentation with the idea of water and islands. As I continue to explore the subject both technically and metaphorically, it seems that there is more to be discovered.
Sitting in front of the painting in the studio for long periods allows me the time to see what "comes up".
I also continue to refine the painting methods for creating a sense of water.
This painting will be shipped to Hunter Kirkland Contemporary in Santa Fe later this month for their summer exhibit.

I am doing a series of smaller vertical format pieces. This is the first. The others are in progress and will be posted as I complete them. These paintings will be presented at my Montreal show on June 29th at Gallerie de Bellefeuille.

Emerood, 2013, oil/panel, 40"x30", (click to enlarge)
The painting below, "Tenque" is a variation on "Emerood" and was painted around the same time. I often find that I like to take a composition and tweak it. In some cases this leads to a series. Other times, the idea will show up repeatedly over the course of several years as I return to it with new discoveries learned in the course of my work.
